Design and cost evaluation of bioprocesses

Material balance, energy consumption, equipment sizing, investment and production cost, sensitivity and uncertainty analysis, cost reduction strategies

ONLINE COURSE: On-demand

COURSE FEE: 300 € per session

COURSE ORGANIZATION

Course organized in 6 sessions

Scheduling: suggested one session per week

Effort: 4 - 8 hours per session

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The course teaches he basic methodology for the design and cost evaluation of bioprocess involving biotransformations, separation and thermal unit operations.

The guiding thread of the course is a virtual R&D project on the design and cost evaluation of an enzyme production process. The project objective is to design the most cost efficient process for the enzyme production by recombinant bacteria.

INSTRUCTOR

  • Jean-Marc ENGASSER, BioProcess Digital

WHAT YOU'LL LEARN

  • Evaluate the bioprocess materials consumption and effluents production, energy consumption and equipment sizes

  • Determine the costs of materials, utilities, labor, equipment investment and utilization, and the overall bioprocess production cost

  • Construct a spreadsheet simulator for bioprocess design and cost evaluation

  • Evaluate the uncertainty of the cost evaluation

  • Assess process modifications to reduce energy consumption and production cost

DIGITAL LEARNING

  • Learning platform with course resources

  • Live or recorded slideshow videos

  • Fermentation project on spreadsheet templates with self-corrections and guides

  • Online collective or one-to-one tutoring
